Longo's teaching, composing, and arranging activities in recent years have kept his piano artistry in lower profile than it deserves. This album is a welcome reminder of Longo's stature as a pianist of strength and subtlety. His intensive study with Oscar Peterson shows in his playing, as does his admiration for Bud Powell. But well before his long engagement with Dizzy Gillespie in the 1960s and 1970s, Longo's individual harmonies and voicings have set him apart, as has his ability to convincingly maintain a pulse through changes in volume and dynamics. These eight trio pieces are prime Mike Longo.
