When ascribing motives to certain recordings,
the words "labor of love" are often misused or overused--but
not so in the case of Mike Longo's "I Miss You John,"
a heartfelt tribute to Dizzy Gillespie that musically expresses
the deep love and respect felt for one of the century's giants of
jazz by his longtime pianist, music director, and friend. This is
the sort of music that induced the celebrated Gillespie smile--driving,
unpretentious riffs and burning solos. It is also tempered by the
occasional introspective ballad and performed with the intensity
and commitment the maestro admired.
