THE MIKE LONGO CLINIC

Pianist / Composer / Author / Teacher Mike Longo is now available for clinics, concerts and seminars in your area. Mike, who for many years was Dizzy Gillespie's pianist and musical director, is also a published author of eight books on jazz education His clinics are available with several different options for your choice. These options include classes and lectures based on the subjects covered in his books.

1. Coaching for performers as well as ensembles.

2. Clinics based primarily on the rhythmic nature of jazz featuring the rhythmic concepts developed by Dizzy and passed on to him.

3. Clinics on jazz compositions and arranging. As of 1997, Mike has had over 70 of his compositions and arrangements recorded by such luminaries as Dizzy Gillespie, Buddy Rich, James Moody and others including himself.

4. Rehearsals and performance by your school ensembles of music from these many recordings for various size ensembles including sextet, quintet, quartet and piano trio arrangements as well as large ensembles including big band as well as full symphony orcherestra. Some of the larger works were created for a featured soloist such as Dizzy Gillespie or James Moody and can be performed with the director of your own ensemble as soloist where applicable. These works are also available with Mr. Longo as soloist with your school ensemble. In many cases, Mr. Longo's clinics culminate in a concert performed by him and his group, The Mike Longo Trio. However, the possibility of a larger ensemble also exists. Since it is possible to open this concert to the public, it can be an excellent way to recoup some of the costs of the clinic.

CLASSES AND LECTURES Classes and / or lectures by Mr. Longo are based on a format of three hour morning and afternoon sessions.

a.) Theory and Musicianship; based on Mr. Longo's course entitled "THEORY AND MUSICIANSHIP FOR THE CREATIVE JAZZ IMPROVISER.

b.) Jazz harmony: based on Mr. Longo's course "VOICING AND VOICE LEADING FOR THE CONTEMPORARY JAZZ PIANIST.

c.) Jazz piano: Based on principals developed over the course of Mr. Longo's long career as well as concepts gleaned from his private studies with Oscar Peterson in the 1960's.

d.) The jazz big band: based on charts by Mike written for the big bands of Dizzy Gillespie, James Moody, Lee Konitz and Buddy Rich as well as his own big band The New York State of the Art Jazz Ensemble.

4. Jazz improvisation for all instruments: Based on Mr. Longo's courses "THE IMPROVISED MELODIC LINE" and " THE TECHNIQUE FOR CREATING HARMONIC MELODY FOR THE JAZZ IMPROVISER."

5. Jazz composition and arranging: Based on techniques developed over a span of 40 years experience.

6. The rhythmic nature of jazz: Based on principles developed by Dizzy Gillespie and taught by him to Mr. Longo.

1. "A WORLD OF GILLESPIE": A three movement suite written by Mr. Longo for full symphony orchestra, trumpet soloist, and jazz rhythm section. commissioned by Dizzy Gillespie and performed by him with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra on 12 / 6 /91. Parts and score available. Soloist can be any Bb instruments

2. "TOMMY MEDLEY": From the Broadway musical and motion picture, arranged by M. Longo for the Buddy Rich Orchestra on an album called "Big Band Machine" released by Groove Merchant Int. records in 1975. Parts and score available for 17 piece big band.

3. "FRISCO": Composed and arranged by M. Longo for the Dizzy Gillespie big band. Recorded by Dizzy at the Berlin Jazz Festival in 1968 on an album called "DIZZY GILLESPIE REUNION BAND" on the MPS / SABA label. Parts and score available.

4. "DANCING ON THE MOON": For big band and trumpet soloist. Composed and arranged by M. Longo for a Dizzy Gillespie network TV appearance on the Dick Cavet Show, 1971. Parts available for 17 piece band and soloist.

5. "ROUND' MIDNIGHT & CON ALMA"; Commissioned by James Moody for big band and saxophone soloist. Parts available for 17 piece band and Bb soloist.

6. Five octet arrangements for three horns and five rhythm from the album "THE AWAKENING" released on Mainstream Records in 1970 with James Moody-Tenor, Alto and Flute; Curtis Fuller-Trombone; Virgil Jones-Trumpet; Al Gafa-Guitar; Ron Carter-Bass; Dizzy Gillespie-Conga Drums; Mike Longo- Electric Keyboards. All Longo originals with parts available.

7. Five quintet arrangements available for jazz / funk ensemble from the album "TALK WITH THE SPIRITS" Released on Pablo Records in 1976. Produced by Dizzy Gillespie. Parts available.

8. Six quintet arrangements from the CD "EL MOODO GRANDE" Released on LRC Records in 1992, originally recorded in 1976 featuring Randy Brecker and Joe Farrell as soloists with Ron Carter on bass, Mickey Roker on drums, and Mike Longo on Piano. Same parts available for clinic.

9. Six quintet arrangements from the CD "I MISS YOU JOHN" Released on the Consolidated Artists Productions (CAP) label in 1996 featuring soloists James Moody, Frank Wess, Jimmy Owens, Cecil bridgewater, David Sanchez, and Mike Longo. Parts available from the recording session.

10. Six small / big band charts available for two trumpets, two trombones, and two tenor saxophones plus five rhythm. From the CD "NEW YORK 78" released on CAP records in 1997, originally recorded in 1978 with Slide Hampton and Curtis Fuller on trombones, Randy Brecker and Jon Faddis on trumpets, and Junior Cook and bob Mintzer on saxophones. Also Mike Longo on piano, Bob Cranshaw on bass, George Davis on guitar, and Steve Kroon on Latin percussion. A mix of Jazz / Latin / and R. &B. roots.
