Young Lions? How about old masters? When all
is said and done, there's really no credible substitute for experience,
paying one's dues, and making every note count. Marvin "Doc" Holladay
has been a working musician for more than half a century, although
much of that time was spent teaching others the sensitive art of improvising
(Holladay helped build Oakland University's Jazz Studies program).
Now, Doc has assembled a remarkably talented trio of like-minded
sidemen to help him realize his dream to play and record again.
His uncommonly responsive rhythm section consists of bassist Eliot
Wadopian, drummer Byron Hedgepeth, and Ozzie Orengo on congas. This
one racks up points for the "senior citizen," as Doc shows beyond
question that when one's God-given talent enables him to produce
music that is consistently engaging and incisive, age is no consideration
at all.
