For his quintet's debut disc, Tim Harrison
has crafted a vibrant set of originals, including the first ever
jazz settings of verse by the great American poet Emily Dickinson.*
Strikingly individual, Harrison's compositional voice
shapes the album, sustaining freshness from the first cut to the
last. The melodies are strong and memorable, and his direct but
eloquent harmonic approach suits the Dickinson work especially well.
From the Bird-inspired "Tim's
Confirmation" and the quirky rhythms of "Mr. Oddsocks"
to the bookend lyrical beauty of "ar•ia" and "Sunna,"
the quintet's interpretations consistently sparkle and
pulse with intelligence and joy.
